Universities, colleges, and other relevant organizations:

In order to deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, promote mutual learning among civilizations, and widely publicize the importance of the Global Civilization Initiative, the International Exchange Center and the Contemporary World magazine under the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Guangxi University formed an Organizing Committee and co-organized the "Youth Creations on Shared Prosperity" contest. We would like to invite you to help organize potential participants. The details are as follows:

 

I. Theme

The event aims to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity and the Belt and Road Initiative. Participants are encouraged to share their views and understanding of the vision and their experiences and feelings on exchanges and mutual learning among different civilizations through essays, paintings, calligraphy and photography on the theme of strengthening exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations worldwide.

 

II. Eligibility

Young people from abroad, especially neighboring countries, are welcome to join, including members of political parties, and media professionals, scholars and international students in China, and can participate either as individuals or in teams. International students may compete with the help of instructors as appropriate.

 

III. Requirements

The contest accepts entries in four categories: essays, paintings, calligraphy and photography, and participants can choose any one or more of these categories. Entries must be original creations based on real life and personal experience that have not been previously published in books, newspapers, periodicals, websites or new media platforms, or submitted to similar competitions.

1. Essays

(1) Essays should center on the theme, and authors should give the work a title. They can cover any sector of society, tell real and vivid stories of China and neighboring countries in building a community with a shared future for humanity, constructing the Belt and Road, and carrying out people-to-people and social exchanges, or else share personal experiences, feelings and observations in one’s studies, daily life and work.

(2) Essays can be written in any genre. Chinese essays should be between 1,000 and 2,000 characters in length, and use Song typeface, Chinese 4-point font and 1.5 line spacing. English essays should be no less than 1,000 words, and use Times New Roman typeface, 18-point font and 1.5 line spacing. Please send your essay to the email address at the end of the notice, with Essay – Name of Author(s) – Nationality – Essay Title in the subject line.

2. Paintings

(1) Paintings should center on the theme to illustrate the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity, showcase the achievements of exchanges and cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, or display the friendship between China and neighboring countries. All categories and styles of paintings are acceptable. Participants do not need to stick to traditional methods of expression, and innovation is encouraged. An introductory text in Chinese (200 characters) or English (150 words) is recommended.

(2) Paintings can be produced on any kind of electronic device or paper. If using an electronic device, please save the painting in image format. If painting on paper, then either photograph or scan the work to convert it into an electronic image (JPEG format, at least 5MB).

(3) Please send the electronic version of your painting to the email address at the end of the notice, with Painting – Name of Painter(s) – Nationality – Painting Title in the subject line. Participants who create their work on paper are encouraged to mail the original to the Organizing Committee via express delivery using the mailing address at the end of the notice.

3. Calligraphy

(1) Calligraphy works should center on the theme to illustrate the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity, the relevance of the Belt and Road Initiative to the world, and the diversity of inter-civilization exchanges and mutual learning. All categories and styles of calligraphy are acceptable. Participants do not need to stick to traditional methods of expression, and innovative design combined with your native language(s) is encouraged. An introductory text in Chinese (200 characters) or English (150 words) is recommended.

(2) Calligraphy works can be written on any medium, although dedicated calligraphy paper is preferred. Please photograph or scan your work and send the image to the email address at the end of the notice, with Calligraphy – Name of Calligraphist(s) – Nationality – Calligraphy Title in the subject line. Participants are also encouraged to mail the original to the Organizing Committee via express delivery using the mailing address at the end of the notice.

(3) If writing on an electronic device, please save your work in image format (JPEG format, at least 5MB) and send it to the email address at the end of the notice, using the aforementioned subject line.

4. Photography

(1) Photographs should capture real-life moments centered on the theme of building a community with a shared future for humanity, construction of the Belt and Road, and cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and neighboring countries. You can photograph social activities, the general public, natural scenery, local customs and so on either in China or neighboring countries.

(2) Photographs should be original, clear, well-composed and have a certain level of artistic expression. Images can be either color or black and white. A brief written introduction on the stories behind the works is required, with a maximum of 500 Chinese characters or 300 English words. Each participant can submit a maximum of two works, composed of either single photograph or groups of photographs (max. three photographs per group will be regarded as one work).

(3) Ensure that your entry is in JPEG format and at least 5MB. Please send it to the email address at the end of the notice, with Photo – Name of Photographer(s) – Nationality – Photo Title in the subject line.

 

IV. Submissions

1. Individual or team participants are required to fill in the Registration Form (see Attachment) and send it with entries to the relevant email address at the end of the notice. (See Part III for more details.)

2. Please include your organization’s information on the Registration Form if submitting entries as a university, college or other organization.

3. You can send your entry and its introductory text to the relevant email address at the end of the notice either in the form of an attachment or Baidu WebDisk link (password included), with the subject line in the following form: Essay/ Painting/ Calligraphy/ Photo – Name of author(s)/ painter(s)/ calligraphist(s)/ photographer(s) – Nationality – Title of Creation.

 

V. Event Calendar

The event is composed of three different stages from May to September 2023.

1. Submission of Entries (May to July)

Deadline for submission via email: July 24

Deadline for submission via express delivery: July 31

2. Jury Reviews and Final Results (August)

From Aug. 1-24, the submissions in four categories – essays, paintings, calligraphy works and photographs – will be appraised by a team of experts arranged by the Organizing Committee.

From Aug. 25-31, the final results will be published on the multilingual website of the Contemporary World magazine (https://www.ddsjcn.com) and the official website of Guangxi University (https://www.gxu.edu.cn/), and awards will be presented to the winning individuals or teams.

3. Publicity (starting September)

The winning works will be published in the Contemporary World magazine (Chinese, English and country-specific versions) and on its multilingual website, as well as the English language WeChat account “CPC WORKS,” and the official website of Guangxi University, as well as other media platforms at home and abroad.

The authors of the submitted works retain the copyright and right of authorship of their works. The Organizing Committee will enjoy the right to use the works, which means the organizers may use the works for publication, publicity and exhibitions without needing to make payment.

Participants should have full, complete and exclusive copyright of the works they submit, and should not violate any third party’s portrait or reputation rights, as well as other intellectual property or personal proprietary rights.

 

VI. Awards and Prizes

1. Essay category

The jury will select 3 first prizes, 6 second prizes and 15 third prizes.

Winners of first, second and third prizes will receive award certificates, as well as 5,000 yuan, 3,000 yuan and 1,000 yuan, respectively, or prizes worth the equivalent amount.

2. Painting category

The jury will select 3 first prizes, 6 second prizes and 15 third prizes.

Winners of first, second and third prizes will receive award certificates, as well as 5,000 yuan, 3,000 yuan and 1,000 yuan, respectively, or prizes worth the equivalent amount.

3. Calligraphy category

The jury will select 3 first prizes, 6 second prizes and 15 third prizes.

Winners of first, second and third prizes will receive award certificates, as well as 5,000 yuan, 3,000 yuan and 1,000 yuan, respectively, or prizes worth the equivalent amount.

4. Photography category

The jury will select 3 first prizes, 6 second prizes and 15 third prizes.

Winners of first, second and third prizes will receive award certificates, as well as 5,000 yuan, 3,000 yuan and 1,000 yuan, respectively, or prizes worth the equivalent amount.

5. Possible adjustments

The awards in the four categories outlined above may be adjusted according to the number of participants and quality of submissions. All participants will be granted access to online content of the Chinese and English versions of Contemporary World magazine published in 2023 and 2024.
